THE NEXT 10 BIG THINGS TO KEEP AN EYE ON.

Wondering what to promote next?

Wish you could have discovered Microsoft or Google before the crowd?

While we can't teach you how to spot the next sleeping giant or two, our crystal ball tells us the following 10 projects in the pipeline could be worth further investigation: (in no particular order)

1) VOIP - Yeah we know, if you're not already on board with this you must have been in hibernation! Voice Over Internet Protocol has already arrived and is going to be a continuing and ever-growing trend.

2) Portable fingerprint systems - the obvious answer to the ever increasing problem of identity theft. Likely to make passwords obsolete in the not too distant future.

3) Fuel efficient hybrid vehicles - battery powered using lithium and bio-diesel fuel cells such as ethanol, hydrogen, vegetable oil and plant extracts will replace petrol in the medium to long term and will save both money and the environment.

4) Fuel cells - dying batteries may well be a thing of the past. Refillable clean energy fuel cells such as methanol already generate power 2.5 times longer than today's most efficient batteries and are increasingly needed with the drain that portable devices such as laptops and mobiles are likely to incur especially when future generations of phones are expected to include power-hungry digital TVs.

5) Radio you can rewind - the digital radio revolution could and then some. Live broadcasts could be paused or rewound. Add CD quality and the capability of picking up many more stations and you can get ready to start throwing out your old radios.

6) GPS applications - already almost standard in luxury cars, there's a raft of lesser known Global Positioning System applications that are starting to emerge. Two such examples are car insurance that reflects your personality (through GPS recording of driver habits) and the Capstone project which uses GPS mapping technology pinpointing planes to within 100cm.

7) A wider World Wide Web - soon search engines will be capable of trawling every database on the Internet (is nothing sacred anymore - it seems not). Privacy issues not withstanding, Google has already got the ball rolling with it's controversial and copyright challenging Google Book Search.

8) Fashion with function - using nanotechnology you can now power your iPod from the clothes you wear. Fabrics are being made from tiny flexible solar cells creating mini power generators that can have huge future application limited only by one's imagination!

9) Songs replacing albums - downloading has seriously undermined the CD market and that trend is set to continue with musicians regularly deciding to release songs online.

10) Cheap fast housing that looks good - prefab is changing from cheap to trendy and is reworking the IKEA model to produce flat pack housing. And, we're talking penthouses for the well heeled being produced in this way. Who would have ever imagined?
